As an environmental science student, am I disadvantaged because what I learn is very broad and not as specialised as say a Life Science student?

Answer:

As mentioned in a previous question, there’s no shortage of opportunities because the sustainability industry is a sunrise one. If you were not trained in science but still want to work in sustainability, you definitely still can get into it so long as you get familiar with key technical terms (and have the mindset of a lifelong learner).

Within Sembcorp in particular, there have been quite a few students who graduated with a degree in environmental science and who have gone on to work with financial products, engineering and sustainability reporting.

How was your interview process to get into NOC like?

Answer:

It's pretty straightforward. There is only 1 interview but for locations that are more competitive I have heard my friends going for 2-3 rounds of interviews.

Generally, the interview focuses on the reason for you to go NOC so u really have to be clear on why you wanna apply for NOC in the first place. Additionally, you have to be really clear on what you put on your portfolio as I was asked to elaborate on some of my experiences

does the degree one studies in uni matters when it comes to applying for a consulting role?

Answer:

I don't think it matters although there are likely benefits/learnings from your degree which are transferrable to the role. For example, being an engineering graduate would grant you design thinking, and perspectives on testing your hypotheses and validating them in the real world, whereas a business graduate may be more well-versed with financials etc.

All in all, a consultant will need to be well-rounded and have to be quick to learn new things on the job. Learning to learn is more important than what you studied in university for being a great consultant.

What is your advice for students enrolling into NYP Infocomm Security?

Answer:

Slightly mentioned in a previous question, read lecture notes, although it is not entirely useful, and ask many many questions to lecturers, because NYP lecture notes only covers the tip of the iceberg.

From my pov, APM is kinda a new role that is aimed to train fresh grads/people with little experience to become a PM. For yourself, how do you find the Associate Product Manager role like?

Answer:

Typically in the West i.e USA, APMs or RPMs are programmes hosted by Big Tech to ramp freshers up into the PM role. APM in SG is focused mainly on freshers who may not have the full suite of knowledge to thrive as a PM, from understanding APIs, exhibiting business acumen and understanding good design. As such, APMs are mostly roles designed for Product Teams to provide guidance to freshers where needed - once APMs exhibit that they are able to progress as a PM independently, then they'll likely be moved to the next level.

For myself, the APM role at YouTrip focuses a lot on execution and providing great, clear requirements (it's never perfect) while managing the development team well to deliver the requirements on time, and with high quality. Given my interactions with other PMs, I do not think our scope of work vary too much - there's simply a higher bar set for PMs to operate more autonomously than APMs. APMs may not have the right institutional knowledge to make the right decisions - and making the wrong decision on a payments app can lead to undesired consequences for the company at scale.

Role: Software Engineer in Tech Startup

is it true that one must master data structures and algorithms to get a job, and then not using them in the job? Meaning that the only reason why we study data structures and algorithm is to just pass the technical interviews and then get the job. During the job itself, you don't really need to use them? Like we don't need to reinvent the wheel, can just use libraries and frameworks. To me, I really feel data structures and algorithms is too hard, so i don't know if I can be a software engineer or not. I like to do web development and I feel so far I don't really need to use any chim data structures and algorithms... just use arrays, arraylist, hashmap and that's it.. Thank you in advance!

Answer:

Data structures and algorithms often serve as a entry point into the role - whether it is used or not in our everyday work - really depends on the type of systems we build.

Larger companies may build their own internal libraries and frameworks so that they have more control over their systems & in these cases, data structures and algorithms may become more essential.

So far, to my knowledge, it may not be particularly useful at junior levels but may come in handy as one scales one’s careers

Role: Head of Operations at The Young SEAkers

What do you do as a head of operations?

Answer:

The scope of the role is changing - there are increasingly less workflows to optimise via SaaS. As such, I’m building a new nonprofit subsidiary arm to drive Tech for Good. This means that my role will be more inclined towards digital product management - where I work with engineers/student devs to develop solutions for social impact. It’s still WIP though!
